Platform Bed Plans - Tips for Building a Simple Platform Bed

Platform bed plans are used when building a bed that has full support underneath it instead of a mattress frame or box spring. Below the mattress long strong straight pieces of wood support the mattress.  This style has been popularized in the 20th century and often comes with a headboard or bedside tables attached which makes it decorative and useful. Many people often think they cannot make their own bed but it is actually not a difficult task. This is a very simple bed to build and an easy do-it-yourself project to complete.

It is believed that this type of bed is close to the original beds people slept in, as opposed to a mattress box spring which was invented in the 19th century.  It has been proven is that a platform bed is better for your spine than a framed box spring. It is recommended that a firm mattress be used with a platform bed plan as this has been proven more helpful for posture.  If you find your bed is too soft then a platform bed plan will definitely produce the support you need. In order to determine if you want a platform bed, the best solution is to visit a bed shop and physically test it out.

Building your own platform bed is simple and very cost-effective.  Many similar beds could cost hundreds of dollars to purchase yet much less to build and purchase the material yourself. Often times a woodworking hobbyists can find the material needed right in their home woodworking shop. 

This is a perfect type of bed to start with since the platform is built right on the ground.  If you prefer to have a lifted bed, adjustments can be made by adding thick bed legs or by adding bricks or wood blocks under the frame.  The room created underneath can be utilized for storage space.  Drawers can also be installed under the bed

Four foot pieces of white pine boards fitted to your bed size Two sheets of ply board Four pieces of long pine strips Deck screws Dowel caps to cover counter sunk screw holes Finishing nails Wood glue (optional)
